General Care

Trophy Tail extensions are 100% horsehair. You can treat them like your real horse’s tail. They can be washed, conditioned and sprayed with all the same products you use on your horse. Tails can even be blown dry for an ultra full look!

We advise that you use a detangler like our Tack Me Up Too Detangler when you comb out your tail extension to protect the precious hairs. Products like our Paddle Brush and our 909 Curved handle brush are very gentle on the hair.

Storing

Keep your tail in a tail extension bag when not in use. This will prevent the hairs from being tangled in between uses. Our Trophy Tail extension bag is a perfect solution for this.

Tail Dyeing

We have done it, but it is not for the faint of heart, especially with an expensive white tail! These tails are made of coarse horse hair. They will take more dye than human hair, and the processing time is longer.

We cannot recommend dying any color except for black. Black hair is by far the safest to dye. If you want to get a true jet black tail, you can simply buy an over the counter hair color. Use two boxes for a one pound tail, and one box for a half pound tail. This will cover up the lighter ends and get rid of any sorrel or white hairs. Like any dye, it will fade after washings, so you may have to re-dye the hair a couple of times during a season. If your horse’s real tail is sun bleached, you can use the same process!

Cautions

Things to avoid to help protect your investment:

  • Do not keep your tail in after you show!
  • Do not turn a horse out with a tail extension. Doing so will probably cause the tail strings to break, or hair may be pulled out if the horse loses the tail extension. These tail extensions are not meant to be used to help a horse flick flies! The weight of these tails actually inhibits tail swishing!

Other Tips

Here are some other tips to help out with your Trophy Tail extension. We are always interested in learning new “tricks.” please feel free to email us at info@tail-tamer.com  with your own experiences or ideas and we will be glad to add them to the list!

A show shine or static guard can be sprayed on the horse’s legs to stop the tail from getting “stuck’ there.

Some light tails have dark caps. You can lighten them instantly simply by wrapping the cap with masking tape! You can buy many different colors of tape at your local hardware store too!
